Honors Senior Thesis Symposium

The Honors Program invites and encourages you all to attend the Second Annual Senior Honors Thesis Symposium on Saturday, April 13 at Union South. As many of you know the Honors in the Major track culminates in a two semester Senior Honors Thesis. This independent research experience involves choosing a thesis topic, finding a thesis advisor, conducting and collecting research, analyzing data, writing the paper, and finally presenting a year’s worth of research at the Senior Honors Thesis Symposium. The Symposium is an all day event. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m., and the Symposium will run from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Registration and admission is free, and includes a light breakfast and a lunch for all who attend. Willis L. Jones Leadership Center (JLC) Intern Position Openings at the Wisconsin Union

The JLC will facilitate unique and intentional experiential opportunities to develop students’ sense of self and their potential to lead.  Through their participation in the JLC students will aspire to recognize how their values, goals, identity and emotions influence their leadership practices and their ability to build trust and credibility. Doing Good at Home and Abroad: Languages and Social Justice

Interested in putting your language skills to good use? Come to this career panel to learn how three UW alumni are making the world a better place, and how their language training helped them along the way! Panelists represent government and non-profit, and have experience working in the fields of human rights, women's education and empowerment, technology, global health, and more. Tuesday, March 5 from 6:00-7:30p.m. in room 126 Memorial Union. This program is a part of the Language for Life series of the Language Institute, which gives current students the opportunity to meet with alumni who studied a foreign language and are using that language in their professional or personal lives in inspiring ways. The Schools of Hope Project is Seeking AmeriCorps State Members

AmeriCorps is a national program that places members in areas of need in the United States to develop or enhance programs and strengthen communities.  As part of the Schools of Hope Project you would be working on a team of AmeriCorps members in the Madison area based at local elementary schools and community centers to provide literacy and math activities and volunteer support for children.  For more information please see below. Summer Course Equivalency Service

This is a reminder that the Summer Course Equivalency Service (SCES) will be available to students from March 1 - May 15.  SCES is an optional service for currently enrolled UW-Madison students who plan to complete summer course work at another institution. It provides information on how summer course work will transfer back to UW-Madison. As always, we will pre-equate a maximum of four courses per student. Please remind students that the total number of credits taken for summer study cannot exceed the total number of weeks the summer session lasts, up to a maximum of 12 credits. Students will not be granted credit for courses that exceed this limit.

Brittingham Viking Scholarship

Then you should apply for the Brittingham Viking Organization (BVO) Finnish scholarship. The Brittingham Viking Organization has been making academic, social and professional connections between UW-Madison and Scandinavia for more than 50 years. Since its founding in 1953, the organization has expanded to allow select students from the University of Wisconsin - Madison to travel to Nordic countries to study at acclaimed universities and experience Nordic cultures and the 'Viking Spirit' through home-stays with previous scholarship recipients. The scholarship amounts to approximately $10,000 USD, which typically covers tuition, housing and a travel stipend for the transatlantic flight. Abraham S. Burak and Kurz Scholarships for Study Abroad

One (1) $500 Abraham S. Burack Scholarship and one (1) $500 Kurz Scholarship will be awarded to eligible L&S Honors Students participating in one of the University of Wisconsin’s Academic Study Abroad Programs during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Students studying for a summer, semester, or a year abroad are eligible for these awards; however, preference is given to students participating in semester or year abroad programs.  Application Deadline:  Wednesday, April 17, 4:15 p.m.  in the Letters & Science Honors Program Office in Washburn Observatory.

Careers in Education/Research for Bioscience Majors

We're excited to announce a pilot lecture series entitled Careers for Bioscience Majors this semester. The series of three lectures will focus on careers undergraduates majoring within the life sciences could pursue after completing their bachelors degree. We try, when inviting guests for the panels to find panelists with UW-Madison backgrounds to aid in the networking for alumni from campus. The  inaugural event is  Thursday, February 21, from 5:30-7:00p.m.  The event will be taking place this month in the Biotechnology Center Auditorium (425 Henry Mall). From  5:30-6:00 students can enjoy snacks and network with fellow undergraduates and the panelists. From 6-7, we will have a moderated panel discussion about the fields represented by the panelists, with audience questions highly encouraged. Advanced registration is requested. Wisconsin AHEC - Community Health Internship Program and Wisconsin Express

Community Health Internship Program (CHIP)  links undergraduate, recent graduate, and graduate student interns with local health departments, community health centers, tribal health centers, community-based organizations, and other agencies throughout the state to address a variety of public health issues. Projects vary widely to suit interns' interests and abilities. Mentors provide technical support and assistance and facilitate shadowing opportunities to help interns gain an understanding and appreciation of the broad range of public health activities undertaken at the local level. Wisconsin Express is a week-long cultural immersion placement for health professions students from all majors nearing completion of their degree/certification. There are 11 community/regional sites this year. Each site welcomes a small group (typically about 8 students) who plunge into interprofessional team-building while exploring the local population's health resources, challenges, communit

Come join the Honors Student Organization next Wednesday, February 27 for a lasagna dinner and a discussion with Professor Mike Koenigs .  Professor Koenigs is in the Department of Psychiatry and studies the brain circuits underlying emotion and social behavior. Land Use, Water Quality and Human Health Study Abroad

Join us in this summer service-learning course in Ecuador!  This 4-week summer service-learning course caters to students in the Global Health certificate program or biological science majors who seek international experience in water quality issues. Students will study the influence of land management practices on water quality, participate in field research and freshwater monitoring, and learn about the epidemiology of water-borne pathogens that impact human health in rural communities. Students will work with local people to monitor drinking water supplies and assist a local health organization in community education. This program provides a unique cultural experience that will broaden students’ global awareness, social skills, cultural competence, and scientific research capabilities, while providing tangible service in the form of research mentoring and education in the local community. Tropical Ecosystems: Andes to Amazon Study Abroad

Explore and study the richest ecosystems on earth during this month-long field course in Ecuador! Learn principles of tropical ecology and gain hands-on on experience with field techniques including bird netting, primate behavior, GIS/GPS and more.  Meet rare and endangered wildlife face-to-face.  Explore the Amazon rainforest, the Andes and the Pacific coast, and join ongoing conservation projects while on this unique educational expedition. The program runs from May 27 to June 24 and students will receive 4 UW credits (Botany/Zoology 460). Applications are due Friday, March 1 .

Certificate in Business Application

The Certificate in Business (CIB) program provides non-business students the opportunity to earn a concentration in a clearly defined academic program in business. The coursework allows students to develop a foundational understanding of business and apply this to their specific field, such as international studies or engineering. In addition to careers related to their own fields, students who earn the certificate have also found job opportunities in management, marketing, and other business fields in the past. There are no specific courses that must be taken before applying. If a student chooses to take CIB courses before being admitted, the courses will fulfill requirements after admission. The application is currently available and will close on Friday, February 15  at 4:30 p.m.

Writing Fellows Program

IAP Scholarships Now Available

IAP is please to announce our new IAP Scholars scholarship .  This competitive scholarship provides students with financial awards starting at $2,500 towards the eligible IAP study abroad program of their choice, and the chance to share their experience to the UW community upon return.

Russian Flagship Program Information Session

Iwanter Prize for Undergraduate Senior Thesis

The annual Iwanter Prize provides an unrestricted $2,000 award to one graduating senior who, through a senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. The award is made possible by a gift to the UW Foundation by Sidney E. Iwanter, an alumnus of the College of Letters & Science (BA History, 1971).

Jewish Studies Awards, Grants, and Scholarships Available

The Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies is pleased to offer a number of awards, grants, and scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at UW–Madison. These funding opportunities include research grants, study abroad scholarships, funding for conference travel, grants for "domestic study" (such as intensive summer language courses in the United States), and awards for general excellence in Jewish Studies coursework. Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

Funding for Foreign Language Study! The competition for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships and awards at UW-Madison is now open. Students are invited to submit applications for Summer 2013 and Academic Year 2013-2014 fellowships and awards. FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UW's National Resource Centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training.  The application deadline is February 15, 2013. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

The Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center is looking for talented and interested undergraduate students at UW-Madison to get involved in stem cell research this summer.  Selected fellows will be paired up with a graduate student or postdoc mentor in one of the SCRMC faculty labs. Fellows will attend journal club style meetings with their mentors during the summer to discuss current stem cell literature as well as hear from UW-Madison faculty.
