Honors Fall Kick-Off

Join us today  Friday, August 30 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. for the annual L&S Honors Program Fall Kick-off. There will be brats, burgers and veggie options under a big tent on the Washburn Observatory Lawn. Come catch up with friends, meet new people, and enjoy the beautiful view.  We hope to see you there! 

Wednesday at Washburn: September 18

Please join us for the first Wednesday at Washburn! The Honors Student Organization (HSO) has invited Professor of Psychology, Christopher Coe, to speak with students about his work and research on Wednesday, September 18. The session will begin at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be provided.

Writing application essays and statements of purpose for graduate school

Are you starting the application process for Graduate school? Attend a workshop at the writing center to learn valuable tips on how to compose a statement of purpose for master's and doctoral programs in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Visit the writing center website  to learn more and to register for one of the available sessions.  For professional school including medical school and law school there will be separate workshops. Stay tuned for details about those.

Senior Honors Thesis Writing Groups

Starting a Senior Honors Thesis this fall?  The Writing center has a support group just for you. The workshop will provide you an opportunity to share and discuss draft, give and receive support, and help you make progress. Fall Career and Internship Fair

Interested in exploring Internships and Careers? Put on your business/professional clothes, bring your resume, and come ready to talk to interested employers on Thursday, September 26 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Kohl Center. This is a great way to begin exploring careers, and learn more about what different organizations do. All majors and fields are welcome! 

Fall Public Service Fair

Interested in a career in public service? Check out the Fall Public Service Fair on T uesday, September 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Union South where you can connect with a variety of different organizations (government and non-profit) and learn more about careers in the public sector. 

Student Organization Fair

The Fall 2013 Student Organization Fair will be Wednesday, September 11 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Kohl Center. This is a great way to learn more about the hundreds of student organizations at UW-Madison!  For tips on ways to make the most of your whirlwind tour of the Organization Fair, check out this video  and this handout  in which you will learn more about what to expect! 

Study Abroad Fair

Come to the Study Abroad Fair, Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 4:00-7:00pm in Varsity Hall, Union South, to find out why the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a national leader in study abroad and why so many Badgers are making the experience a part of their UW career! The study abroad fair is a comprehensive information event for anyone interested in learning more about the many exciting study and intern abroad opportunities available at UW-Madison. Over 90 exhibits displaying information about UW sponsored programs, including IAP's more than 200 programs will provide a one-stop shopping experience!

Honors Advising Hours for Fall

We have finalized our Drop-in and Chat Advising Schedule for the Fall term (starting the first week of classes). All of these times can be found on our on-line calendar . Drop-in Advising  will be available on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Chat Advising  will be available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m - 1:00 p.m. and Monday-Thursday from 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. For Welcome Week (August 26-August 30) we will have Drop-in Advising available on:  Monday, August 26 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 27 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.  Friday, August 30 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 

Sociology 475: Classical Sociological Theory for Honors (still open)

Looking for an honors only social science course? This one may be for you!  This course is a basic introduction to the writings of Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. We will have two goals in reading and discussing this material during the course of the quarter. The first, not surprisingly, is to understand the theoretical arguments that these authors are making — the logic of their arguments, the underlying assumptions, the internal contradictions and difficulties the arguments encounter, and the ways in which the authors (sometimes) support their theoretical arguments with data. The second goal of the class is to use these readings as examples of how to construct theoretical arguments in sociology. Many courses in the social sciences and humanities ask students to use texts as vehicles for criticism — that is, to summarize what particular authors say about a topic and to critique or defend the assertions of those authors. The focus in this course will be on using the reading

Low Cost LSAT Prep Course

UW-Madison is offering an early fall LSAT Prep Course to help students prepare for the October and December LSAT test dates. This shorter course can help students decide if they might need to pursue a more intensive (and more costly) commercial test prep course.
