Future Perfect Retail Conference

The Kohl's Department Stores Center for Retailing Excellence and the School of Human Ecology has extended an invitation for participation in the  Future Perfect Retail Conference , to be held  Wednesday, October 2 , from  8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  (Varsity Hall, Union South).  Please visit this website  to register for sessions and learn more about the event. Study Abroad Opportunity over January Break

Thinking about studying abroad? The Soils of the Tropics program in Costa Rica is a great option during winter break! Soils of the Tropics, Costa Rica This program will offer exposure to professional field work with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with different soil types and locations in the tropics. Students will combine technology with field work to sample soil, gather data and provide diagnostic ideas for different soil conditions. No previous experience required. All majors are welcome. Now Hiring Employees for Campus SAFE Walk

Have you ever thought about working at SAFE walk?  Students say it is an important and meaningful student employment.  It gives students a chance to play an important role in maintaining a safe and friendly campus.  SAFE walk usually hires once a year in the late spring.  However, they are currently expanding the program in response to recent events. Honors Vidoes

We are currently looking for Honors students who are interested in sharing their honors stories for a few outreach and prospective student videos. You have unique stories about your personal honors experiences, and we want to hear how the Honors Program has made a difference in your journey here at UW, and how it might impact your future endeavors and careers. We appreciate the vibrant contributions you make to the Honors Program and culture, and it will be great for other students to hear from their peers about all that the L&S Honors Program has to offer.  If you would like to share your honors experience, please email us at honors@honors.ls.wisc.edu about setting up a brief (15-30 minute) interview time. We will be filming interviews in the afternoon on Friday, Oct. 4, Oct. 11, and Oct. 18.

Returnee Event: Digital Storytelling Workshop/Film Fest

Share the study abroad experience through digital storytelling! This workshop, led by DesignLab and Software Training for Students (STS), will provide returned study abroad students with resources to being to create and produce a digital story, a 3-5 minute long film of images, narration, and music. On November 13, students will have the opportunity to share their digital story with workshop participants in a mini film fest.  The workshop will take place on October 4, from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. in the DesignLab Media Studio A (College Library, 2nd floor). Publishing Opportunity with Illumination

Have you written poetry, prose, or essays? Have you produced artwork? Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities is accepting submissions in these areas for our fall issue. This is a chance to publish work that you are particularly proud of and show it to the student body. What’s more, the submission process is quite simple, and can be found here .   Illumination will be accepting poetry, prose, essays, and artwork until September 23 rd at midnight . Jewish Studies Grants

The Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies is now accepting applications for travel and research funding through the Mazursky Student Support Fund. Through the Charles and Gayle Mazursky Student Support Fund, the Center for Jewish Studies is able to offer a number of grants for research-related travel, including travel to resources (e.g., archives, oral history interviews, etc.), other venues essential for carrying out work on an undergraduate or graduate thesis, or travel to professional conferences. Funds may also be used for research materials, but not books or related materials for courses. Mazursky grants will typically amount to $500 for domestic travel and $800 for international travel, but more or less may be awarded at the discretion of the scholarships committee.  For more information and to download the application, please visit our website . Senior Honors Thesis Grants

Students who are completing senior honors theses and graduating in May 2014 or earlier are encouraged to apply for the Trewartha, Mark Mensink, and Ann J. Haney Infinite Boundaries Honors Research Grants. These grants are designed to provide financial support for students as they work on their senior thesis. Psychology Major Info Sessions

Attend a Psych Major Info session and discover if an undergraduate major in psychology is a good fit for you! We will review the psychology major requirements, college degree requirements, research opportunities, and different ways to get involved. You will also learn about the skills you gain by studying the field of psychology and potential career paths. 

Exploration Center Open House

The Exploration Center for Majors and Careers will be holding an Open House this coming Tuesday, September 17. We encourage all undecided and exploring students to attend! Career advisors and career peers will be on hand to answer questions and explain our resources. The Open House will take place from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in Room 6 of Ingraham Hall. The L&S Honors Program will be going to see Tosca, performed by the Madison Opera on Sunday, November 3, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets will be first come first serve and can be purchased for $15.00 at Washburn Observatory. Senior Honors Thesis Grant Information Sessions

There are two information sessions at Washburn Observatory this week for students interested in applying for the Trewartha, Mark Mensink, and Ann J. Haney Infinite Boundaries Honors Research Grants.  Students who are completing senior honors theses and graduating in May 2014 or earlier are eligible to apply. The sessions are: Tuesday, September 10 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 11 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. You can download the application for the Trewartha and Mensink Grant here . Journal of Undergraduate International Studies Fall 2013 Call for Submissions

The Journal of Undergraduate International Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is currently accepting submissions for its Fall 2013 issue.  The journal seeks to publish the best undergraduate work across the country related to international themes and topics including, but not limited to: international conflict and conflict resolution, human rights, environmental issues, history, comparative politics and economics, development and trade, global security and international health.

IAP Study Abroad Scholarships

IAP Scholars are competitive scholarships that provide students with financial awards starting at $2,500 towards the eligible IAP study abroad program of your choice, and the chance to share your experience to the UW community upon your return.  Students studying abroad during winter break 2013-2014, Calendar Year 2014, Spring 2014 or Spring Break 2014 are eligible to apply.  For the complete description of the scholarship, including how to apply, visit our website . 2013 Luce Scholar Program Competition

This scholarship provides a year's internship in an Asian country related to the scholar's interests. Any professional field will be considered, with the exception of Asian Affairs/Asian Studies. The program is designed to provide highly qualified young Americans, who lack extensive knowledge of Asian affairs and who would not gain this knowledge through their normal career trajectories, an extended period of exposure to an Asian country. To be eligible, a nominee must be a U.S. citizen, under the age of 30 at the beginning the program, and hold at least a B.A. Applicants should have little or no experience in the country of internship.

Strategies for Learning Foreign Langauges
