Peer Research Mentor Drop-in Sessions Available

Are you interested in getting involved in research on campus? Do you wish there were students available with research experience and mentor training who could advise their peers about why and how to find a research opportunity? Look no further!   We are pleased to announce that Peer Research Mentors are available for drop-in sessions at Steenbock Library on Tuesdays ( 6-8pm ) and Wednesdays ( 6-8pm ) from Feb. 4 - Apr. 30, 2014 (no sessions during Spring Break). Sessions are held in study room 108 on the ground floor. These mentors have expertise in bioscience research . This programming is presented as part of the BioCommons , an effort sponsored by the Institute for Biology Education and Steenbock Library to create common space to support students across the biological sciences.

Spring Career and Internship Fair

Join us for the largest career fair of the semester on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Kohl Center . You will be able to meet with representatives from more than 175 local, regional, and national employers. Begin a job or internship search, start networking with employers, or just start researching companies and careers. This event is open to all students and alumni. Program in Coastal Biology

Beginning in 2013, the University of North Florida became one of the newest host sites for the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. The UNF REU Program offers paid research training experiences in Coastal Biology to 10 undergraduates students during a 10-week period between June 2 and August 8, 2014. REU participants will be paired with Coastal Biologists at UNF, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR), and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Jacksonville Field Lab and conduct mentored research projects related to their advisor's expertise. At the beginning of the program, students will complete a 1-week orientation on performing research in Coastal Biology to prepare them for their directed research projects. Students will also gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their project at a departmental-wide research poster mini-symposium. Particip

2014 Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grant

The 2014 Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grant Application is now open! The grant enables students to undertake more demanding and extensive senior thesis research projects than might otherwise be possible. Besides recognition of an excellent thesis proposal, grant recipients are provided a cash stipend of up to $3,000 to cover research-related expenses. For example, these resources may enable students to travel to archives or research sites, to initiate research activities that require special funding, or to defray living expenses in order to focus on producing a thesis.

2014 Jewish Studies Scholarships

The Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies is pleased to offer a number of awards, grants, and scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at UW-Madison. These funding opportunities include research grants, study abroad scholarships, funding for conference travel, grants for "domestic study" (such as intensive summer language courses in the United States), and awards for general excellence in Jewish Studies coursework.  Application forms and instructions are now available on our website . Foreign Language Area Study (FLAS) Fellowships

The competition for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships and awards at UW-Madison is now open. Students are invited to submit applications for Summer 2014 and Academic Year 2014-2014 fellowships and awards. FLAS fellowships are funded by the US department of Education and administered by the UW's National Resource Centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. 

Star Gazing with HSO

  Join the Honors Student Organization (HSO) and astronomy professor Jim Lattis on Wednesday, February 12 for stargazing from the Washburn Observatory. A light supper will be served and stargazing will begin at 6:00 p.m. We hope to see you there! 

Journal of Undergraduate International Studies Call for Submissions and Editors

The Journal of Undergraduate International Studies (JUIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is currently accepting submissions for its Spring 2014 issue. The journal seeks to publish the best undergraduate work across the country related to international themes and topics including, but not limited to: international conflict and conflict resolution, human rights, environmental issues, culture, history, comparative politics and economics, development and trade, global security and international health. JUIS is currently accepting submissions of written work or photographs. JUIS is also currently recruiting editors and a layout designer for the Spring 2014 semester. Fulbright UK Summer Institute 2014 Program

The US-UK Fulbright Commission is pleased to announce that applications are open for the 2014 UK Summer Institutes. These summer programmes provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three, four, five or six week academic and cultural summer programme. Participants will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic programme at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills. Add/Drop Deadlines

Wednesday, January 29 will be the last day to drop courses without a notation on your transcript. Friday, January 31 will be the last day to add courses without departmental approval.  Visit the Registrar's website to take a look at upcoming deadlines. Feel free to stop by the Honor's Office during drop-in hours or call to schedule an appointment if you have questions about dropping or adding a class!

Taiwan Study Abroad Scholarship

The Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) is pleased to announce that "Ambassador" Scholarships are again being offered to U.S. college students during the summer of 2014. The purpose of the program is to provide instruction in Mandarin Chinese and to acquaint students with the rich culture of Taiwan. The program's aim is to provide opportunities to those eager to pursue overseas immersion in the Mandarin language and Taiwanese culture. The class is open to all levels of proficiency in Chinese language, including advanced levels of Mandarin studies. Accepted students will be enrolled in the Chinese Language Center at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City, Taiwan. The university is recognized as one of the two top institutions of higher education in Taiwan.

Engineering Career Fair Open to All Students

Thinking about a major in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics? The College of Engineering is hosting an Engineering Career Services fair on February 3rd and 4th at Union South .  All UW-Madison students and alumni are invited, although employers focus on STEM recruiting at the event and students will need to show an ID to be admitted to the fair. Companies recruiting at the fair include Oracle Corp., Georgia-Pacific, Amazon, Microsoft, and many more! For more information on recruitment, most STEM majors can establish a myECS account. 'Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities' accepting submissions

Have you written poetry, prose, or essays? Have you produced artwork?   Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities  is accepting submissions in these areas for the Spring 2014 issue. This is a chance to publish work that you are particularly proud of and show it to the student body. What’s more, the submission process is simple, and can be found at  uwilluminationjournal.com/get- involved .    Illumination  will be accepting artwork, poetry, prose, and essays  until  February 10th .  Submissions can also be sent via email to  Illumination   .  

Upcoming Teach for America Deadline -- January 24, 2014

Current seniors: the Teach for America 4th application deadline is January 24, 2014 .  Teach For America  is a national non-profit organization that aims to combat educational inequity and provide more children the opportunity to attain an excellent education. We recruit a diverse group of leaders from all academic backgrounds who work to expand educational opportunity, starting by  teaching for two years in a low-income community . Sustainability Lunch HOUR (Highlight of Undergrad Research)

The Sustainability Lunc h HOUR  (Highlight of Undergraduate Research) , sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, promotes undergraduate research which relates to social, economic, or environmental sustainability. These informal brownbag sessions will give a chance for undergraduates to showcase their research and gain valuable presentation experience.  They will present their research for 15-20 minutes at one of the lunch HOUR meetings. This is also an opportunity to educate the greater UW-Madison community about your research. Snacks will be provided! We are currently gathering applications for the Spring 2014 semester. Fiction Writers Association Kickoff

Do you like writing? Whether you're just starting or you've been writing for years, the Fiction Writers Association can help you improve your writing and connect you with a community of other student writers. We meet every week to workshop someone's writing and discuss writing and share reads and ideas.  Come check us out and hear about what we do at our kickoff Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5pm.
