Schools of Hope Recruiting Summer & Year-Long Americorps Members

AmeriCorps is a national program that places members in areas of need in the United States to develop or enhance programs and strengthen communities. The Schools of Hope program in Madison works with local elementary schools and community centers to provide literacy and math activities and volunteer support for children. Applying to Graduate School Workshop

Are you an undergraduate student thinking about applying to graduate school? Come attend the Graduate School 101 Workshop on April 4 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Memorial Union. This presentation is intended to provide more information about what is involved in the graduate school application process. Staff from the UW Graduate School will be giving an overview of what graduate school is and how to prepare for it: the application process, funding, and how to go about finding a program. Questions? Mollere Pre-Med Scholarship

The application period for the Mollere Pre-Medicine Scholarship is now open. The scholarship provides $9,000 to a Letters & Science junior or senior (currently 3rd or 4th year student) pursuing medical school. There is one scholarship available for Fall 2014 ($4,500) and Spring 2015 ($4,500). The deadline has been extended to April 14, 2014 .  Eligible students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be taking pre-med course work. They must also demonstrate financial need and have a FAFSA filed. Preference is given to students who demonstrate breadth outside of biological sciences, and donors prefer recipients that do not smoke or use alcohol or drugs. Undergraduate Research Opportunity in Genetics Lab

The Genetics Lab is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated undergraduate (preferably sophomore or higher as of fall 2013) interested in gaining research experience. The main goal of the project is to identify genomic regions important in the evolution of large body size in an Island population of house mice. The position entails breeding wild caught mice, daily weight measurements, xray imaging, euthanization, and data entry. The mice are housed off campus with bus access. We are most interested in any individual with prior research or animal handling experience. The individual needs to be willing to travel to and from the facility either by bus or car and comfortable with euthanization. Covance Women in the Workplace Workshop

Chinese Placement Test

Have you had some experience with Chinese before coming to UW-Madison? Are you interested in taking a Chinese language class? If so, consider taking the computer-assisted Chinese Placement Test to see which class is most appropriate for you! The test includes speaking, listening, grammar, reading, writing, and dictation sections, and takes about two hours. The upcoming test date is April 3, 2014 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in 250 Van Hise Hall . Amnesty International Conference

Amnesty International is hosting a Human Rights Conference April 4-6 2014 in Chicago, IL. The conference is built around the theme of Bringing Human Rights Home and will bring together people from around the country to stand with residents of Chicago and connect to their struggles around the world. The conference will provide an opportunity to hear from human rights experts and human rights defenders, develop leadership skills, and connect with others who care about dignity and justice. There will be incredible speakers discussing women's rights, gun violence, LGBT rights, and more , including Glenn Greenwald , who will discuss NSA surveillance. MadBiology Bootcamp

MadBiology Bootcamp is designed to help incoming first-year students who are interested in the biosciences make a successful transition from high school to college. This free three-day residential camp, held just prior to the start of the fall semester, provides opportunities to connect with peers, learn about the breadth of biology and the variety of bioscience careers, visit labs and meet faculty and staff, gain college survival skills, and learn about resources on campus. There are additional follow-up sessions throughout the fall semester. Applications are now open for incoming first-year students interested in attending MadBiology Bootcamp as well as undergraduate students who would like to become paid camp counselors! Japan-America Student Conference

Initiated in 1934, Japan-America Student Conference ( JASC ) boasts  alumni  such as Henry Kissinger and brings together 72 student leaders from Japan and the U.S. for a month with the goal of improving U.S.-Japan relations. Delegates will delve into critical topics ranging from Art & Identity to Immigration to Technological Advancements to Native American Experience, learn firsthand from established leaders and field trips, build their professional network through networking receptions, and forge life-long friendships. Summer Internship at Michigan State University

The National Science Foundation's REU program in the BITLab (Behavior Information Technology) at Michigan State University has several computer science and social science summer internship positions available. The internships start on May 19, 2014 and run for 10 weeks, 40-hours per week. Interns are paid between $15-$20 depending on the student's qualifications and experience. Undergraduates are eligible to apply if they are US citizens or permanent residents enrolled at any 4-year university for the Fall of 2014. Interested in a School of Education Major? After spring break and before you enroll in classes for next fall, come to a School of Education Information Session on one of the following majors: Rehabilitation Psychology, Elementary Education, or Kinesiology/Athletic Training.  Advisors and faculty members will be at the sessions to address questions about the major, courses, volunteer experiences, and careers. Attend the Senior Honors Thesis Symposium

The Honors in the Major track culminates in a two semester senior thesis, which includes choosing a topic, finding an advisor, conducting and collecting research, analyzing data, writing the paper, and finally presenting a year's worth of research at the Senior Honors Thesis Symposium. We invite and encourage you all to attend the Third Annual Senior Honors Thesis Symposium on Saturday, April 5 at the Pyle Center . The Symposium is an all day event. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m., and the symposium will run from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Registration and admission is free, and includes a light breakfast and a lunch for all who attend. L&S Honors Program Bromley Research Conference Travel Grant

The grants are awarded based on a competitive application process to eligible L&S Honors students for presentation and/or attendance at regional or national professional conferences. Review of applications and selection of Bromley Research Conference Travel Grant recipients will be conducted by the L&S Faculty Honors Committee.    - Grants awarded for presentation at regional or national conferences provide up to $500 to the recipients.   - Grants awarded solely for attendance at regional or national conferences provide up to $250 to the recipients.  Priority for awards is given to applications requesting support for presentation at professional conferences. Wisconsin Festival of Ideas: Call for Student Presenters

The WUD Distinguished Lecture Series Committee (DLS) is organizing the second annual Wisconsin Festival of Ideas . WFI is a one-day conference organized by DLS showcasing some of the best and brightest ideas and collaborations happening on campus by students and faculty alike. Distinguished Lecture Series is looking for exceptional students to present their innovative research, projects, and ideas. This is a valuable opportunity for undergrads and graduate students to show how their work will reach beyond their studies to benefit other disciplines and the community. The event will be held on  Saturday, April 19, 2014 in the H.F. DeLuca Forum and Atrium (Town Center) in the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery from 9:30am to 6:30pm .
