Day in the Field -- GCRC Government Career Fair in Chicago

Interested in working for Federal or State Government agencies?

L & S Career Services invites students to attend The Government College Relations Council's (GCRC) annual Government Career Fair!

Who should consider attending?
Any UW student interested in a career in government.  This fair will be of interest to students of ALL majors. Government agencies hire people from all majors and all backgrounds. Learn more here: https://help.usajobs.gov/index.php/Federal_Occupations_by_College_Major#icc

When: Friday, November 14th from 1-4 pm
Where: The Student Center of the University of Illinois - Chicago
How: L& S Career Services is chartering a bus to take students down to the fair and return them to Madison. See logistics info below. Space is limited!

LOGISTICS:   Our chartered bus will depart from the Chazen Museum at 9:30am and should arrive in Chicago around 12:30pm. There is a food court at the UIC student center where you can grab a bite to eat before the fair begins and before departing for the return to Madison. The bus will depart Chicago at 4:30pm.  Details subject to minor change.

AGENCIES ATTENDING:  Confirmed agencies will be available closer to the event, but past attendees have included:  CIA, Dept of Energy, Federal Aviation Administration, IL DNR, US Marshals Service, Federal Air Marshals, FBI, ATF, Drug Enforcement Agency, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, State Dept, the VA, Americorps, Peace Corps, Dept of Labor, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, IRS, Dept of Homeland Security, and many more.

PROGRAMMING:  There will also be several 30 minute mini workshops which you can drop into during the fair.  Topics will include: Finding and Applying for Federal Jobs (by OPM), 30 Seconds to Make an Impression (including what to do when employers won’t take your resume), Secrets of Federal Resume Writing (by Marie Koko), How to Stand Out From the Crowd, and a joint session by IL State Police and CBP about Careers in Law Enforcement.

RESUME:  While few government agencies will take your resume (preferring to have you apply at USAJobs.gov), you should have it with you just in case the representative does want a copy.

Need to have your resume reviewed before the fair? L&S students can come to drop-ins or make an appointment here (grad or undergrad):  http://careers.ls.wisc.edu/Undergraduate-Advising.htm

ATTIRE:  Business professional - a suit and tie for men;  a pant/skirt suit or career dress for women.  Think about what you see government folks wearing on TV and emulate that.

HOLD YOUR PLACE:  Right now we need to gauge interest to determine the size of the bus we should reserve. The greater the interest, the bigger the bus!   If you think you would like to attend the fair, please RSVP at this link: https://uwmadison.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_02FwsAOJEpoX3cV  You must provide your first AND last name, your Wisc.edu email address, and your Major (if you have more than one, enter the one you consider dominant).

Those who RSVP will be contacted by Greg Laccarino with further details about the event.
