Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship

Are you interested in research on campus, but not sure where to start? Are you currently working with a faculty member on research, and looking for a way to continue your progress over the summer? The Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant is a great opportunity to get involved with research for the first time, or to build on your current experience, by working with a faculty member over the summer.

Who is eligible?
L&S Honors Program students can complete an apprenticeship either in the summer between their first and second years, or their second and third years. Both
Honors in the Major and Honors in the Liberal Arts students are eligible.

What is the apprenticeship?
Through the generosity of the Welton Family Foundation, the Brittingham Trust, and the Knapp Bequest Fund, apprentices are paid $2000 to work about 20 hours a week for 10 weeks for a faculty member. That faculty member agrees to teach you about how to do research, and you get valuable experience while also getting paid!

How do I apply?
First, attend one of two informational workshops in the Washburn Observatory conference room. The sessions are not mandatory, but will help with the application process. These sessions will be held:

  • Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Monday, December 8, 2014 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Second, identify a faculty mentor. The application is a joint application between you and the faculty member, so it helps to identify someone early on. Not sure who to ask? The info sessions will have helpful pointers. (If you can't attend an information session, you can contact me directly at mkohlstedt@wisc.edu.)

Third, apply by Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

The application will be available at scholarships.wisc.edu in January (an email will go out when it's available), and we'll have copies of the questions at the info sessions, as well as in the Honors Program office after December 8.

[Update: Here is the handout that was distributed at the information sessions. Note this is not the application, the application will be available at scholarships.wisc.edu in January.]
