Aisthesis Journal Call for Submissions

Aisthesis, an undergraduate journal that includes a cross-disciplinary selection of work from Honors students around the country and is produced by students in University Honors at the University of Minnesota Duluth, is sending out a call for submissions. The journal accepts research projects, essays, poetry, fictional stories, photographs, graphic art, etc. from every major and discipline of Honor students like you. Aisthesis offers an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to be published in a respectable, student-produced journal, providing a mark of personal achievement. Wednesday at Washburn

Join the Honors Student Organization for the last Wednesday at Washburn of the semester! On Wednesday, May 7 , we will be joined by Professor of Classics, William Brockliss . Come here Professor Brockliss speak about his work and research at this informal session, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Washburn Observatory. Light refreshments will be served. Fulbright Writing Workshop

International Studies Multi-Media Presentation

Please join us for the Honors Program and International Studies Major Multi-Media Presentation! Professor Scott Straus will be hosting presentations about human trafficking, territorial conflict, women's empowerment and other international issues. Events will take place Thursday May 1 and Thursday May 8 at Washburn Observatory.

Alt Breaks Leadership Team

The Alternative Breaks program provides UW-Madison students with an opportunity to participate in volunteer and educational trips to a range of communities throughout the United States. Alternative Breaks provides service learning opportunities working with important issues such as the environment, education, immigration, poverty, and other unmet human needs. Alternative Breaks exposes students to areas and experiences which cannot be replicated on the UW Madison campus. These lessons and perspectives can then be applied in students' own studies, student orgs, and out-of-school activities.  There are FIVE openings on the Wisconsin Union Directorate's Alt Break Leadership team for next year! The application for these positions is due Saturday, May 3, at 12:00 pm with a preferred deadline of Friday, April 25 . Applications and more details about each position can be found here . Study Cafe for Finals

Looking for a good study spot for finals? The L&S Honors Program will be opening up our space at Washburn Observatory Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9! Join us anytime between 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. for light refreshments and a great study atmosphere! If you have a group project or would like to study with friends or classmates, the conference room and seminar room can be reserved for one hour at a time between 12:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. If you are interested in reserving a spot, please email honors@honors.ls.wisc.edu and let us know the day, time slot, and name and email address for one member of your group. Reservations will be first come first serve.  Stay tuned for more information as finals approach. We hope to see you there!

2014 Iwanter Prize

The annual Iwanter Prize provides an unrestricted $2,000 award to one graduating senior who, through a senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. The award is made possible by a gift to the UW Foundation by Sidney E. Iwanter, an alumnus of the College of Letters & Science (BA History, 1971).  The application deadline is May 7, 2014 at 5:00 pm. The Classics Lectures Series Presents: Dr. Egbert Bakker

Join the Classics Department as they invite Dr. Egbert Bakker to give a guest lecture, "In and Out of the Golden Age: The Temporality of Odysseus' Return." The lecture will take place on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. in room 104 Van Hise Hall . This event is free and open to the public! Egbert Bakker is Professor of Classics at Yale University, having previously taught at the University of Texas at Austin and Universite de Montreal. His scholarship has revolutionized the study of ancient Greek texts, particularly the Homeric poems, through the application of methodologies drawn from linguistics and from the study of oral poetics (Linguistics and Formulas in Homer, 1988: Poetry in Speech: Orality and Homeric Discourse, 1997; Pointing at the Past: From Formula to Performance in Homeric Poetics, 2005). 1 Credit Bioscience Research Course

Thinking about getting started in a research lab this summer or fall? Consider enrolling in Biology 260: Entering Research ! This 1-credit fall seminar course for sophomore, junior, and transfer students supports and enhances independent research experiences. To participate, students simply register for Bio 260, save space in their schedule for 1-3 research credits, and find a research mentor.  If you need help finding a research mentor, drop in to chat with our peer research mentors in Steenbock Library study room (108 ground floor) Tuesdays and Wednesdays (6-8 pm)! Writing Personal Statements for Medical School Applications

Applying to medical school? Learn how to write convincing and persuasive personal statements for medical school admission! This workshop will consider how to write personal statements and will examine some successful examples. Suicide Prevention Walk

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's student organization Ask.Listen.Save. will be hosting its fourth annual, award-winning Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk on April 13th . Sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, this nationally renowned campus walk will benefit suicide prevention efforts both on campus and in the surrounding community. Etiquette Dinner

Not sure which fork to use for which course of the meal?  Need etiquette tips for an upcoming business dinner? You can learn proper dinner etiquette in a fun environment with other students while being served a gourmet meal!   The Letters & Science Career Services office presents the 2014 Etiquette Dinner on Tuesday, April 8 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Gordon Commons . Tickets are $10 each and include a four-course gourmet meal!  Limit two tickets per student. Tickets sales start Wednesday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m. and must be purchased with exact cash or check. Tickets may be purchased at the L&S Career Services office located at 1305 Linden Drive Suite 205 (office hours are Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 4:30 pm). Questions?
