CPHA Health Professions Shadowing Program Summer 2016

The Center for Pre-Health Advising has partnered with UW Hospital and Clinics to offer UW-Madison students a two-week residential shadowing program in August 2016. Our goal is to help students make more informed decisions about career choices and become more competitive applicants. The program is designed to help students who lack connections to health professionals make these connections.

All participants will have the opportunity to shadow a variety of health professionals for two hours each day. Students will observe clinicians in their routine responsibilities and learn about the qualities that characterize successful health care providers. In addition to daily clinical observation the program includes the following experiences:
  • Students will meet daily with first- or second-year students in a health professions program on the UW-Madison campus.
  • Students will hear from the providers who work in local free clinics and community health organizations.
  • Students will attend presentations on health disparities in WI tribal communities.
  • Students will observe a mock patient case with students in UW-Madison’s Physician Assistant program.
  • Students will conduct informational interviews with social workers, financial department representatives, and other key constituents in the UW Health system.
  • Students will present a final project at the celebratory dinner that will close this summer's program. Projects will address a topic that the students engaged during the two previous weeks of clinical immersion, and they might take the form of a 5-minute TED talk or a video that will address a health topic the students explored during the program.
There are no costs associated with participation in this program; the Center for Pre-Health Advising will provide students with housing and meals during the two weeks that they are on campus participating in the program.
