Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant

Are you interested in research on campus, but not sure where to start? Are you currently working with a faculty member on research, and looking for a way to continue your progress over the summer? The Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant is the perfect opportunity to get involved with research for the first time, or to build on your current experience, by working with a faculty member over the summer.

Who is eligible?
Students complete an apprenticeship either in the summer between their first and second years, or their second and third years.

What is the apprenticeship?
Through the generosity of the Welton Family Foundation, the Brittingham Trust, and the Knapp Bequest Fund, apprentices are paid a $2500 stipend to work with a faculty member. That faculty member agrees to teach you about how to do research, and you get valuable experience!

 How do I apply?
1. Attend one of three information sessions in the Washburn Observatory conference room.
Friday, December 16, 2016  11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (Fall semester study day)
Monday, January 23, 2017  12:20-1:20 p.m.
Thursday, January 26, 2017 3:15-4:15 p.m.

2. Identify a faculty mentor. The application is a joint application between you and the faculty member, so it helps to identify someone early on. Not sure who to ask? The information sessions will also have helpful pointers on identifying willing faculty mentors.

3. Apply by Wednesday, March 8, 2017 before 11:59 p.m. The application will be available at scholarships.wisc.edu in early January.

Contact Matt Kohlstedt at matt.kohlstedt@wisc.edu with questions or to set up a separate meeting time if you are unable to attend any of the info sessions.
