Working in Healthcare Series: Medicine

The Center for Pre-health Advising invites you to join them for the first panel of the series Working in Healthcare: Medicine on Wednesday, February 6 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. DeLuca Forum, Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, First Floor.  This panel will include four physicians from UW Hospital and Clinics speaking about their experiences working in medicine.

Aisthesis Honors Journal Accepting Submissions

Consider submitting your academic work to Aisthesis Honors Journal , an undergraduate journal produced by students in University Honors at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Aisthesis Honors Journal is a cross-disciplinary selection of work from Honors students around the country. The journal accepts research projects, essays, poetry, fictional stories, photographs, graphic art, etc. from every major and discipline of Honors students like you, who are either current Honors students or enrolling in Honors classes. Aisthesis offers an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to be published in a respectable, student-produced journal, providing a mark of personal achievement and pride.

Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grants

Are you starting a Honors Senior Thesis next year? Consider applying for the Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grant! The Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grant enables students to undertake more demanding and extensive senior thesis research projects than might otherwise be possible.   Besides recognition of an excellent thesis proposal, grant recipients are provided a cash stipend of up to $3,000 to cover research-related expenses.  For example, these resources may enable students to travel to archives or research sites, to arrange participant interviews, or to initiate other research activities that require special funding. Please attend the  Senior Honors Thesis Info Session on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. in the Library at Washburn Observatory  to learn more about the grant and about the senior honors thesis in general. 

Fulbright Information Session

Tuesday, January 29, Noon, at Union South, Room TBD If you are an undergraduate interested in pursuing a project abroad after you graduate, this session is for you. Undergraduates at all levels are welcome to attend; it's never too early to find out what you'll need to do to produce a competitive Fulbright application .  If you will be graduating in December 2013 or May 2014, you should begin planning your project this semester. 

Writing Center Workshop: Writing Proposals for Hilldale and Holstrom Research

If you're applying for one of the University's prestigious Hilldale or Holstrom awards, don't miss this Writing Center workshop on  Wednesday, January 30 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. You'll have the chance to share your proposal and abstract with an instructor from the Writing Center and a small group of other applicants. These readers will offer you suggestions for improving your application so that it's as strong and competitive as possible. Come join the Honors Student Organization at our first Wednesday at Washburn presentation of the spring semester. It will take place the evening of February 6 at 6:00 p.m.  in the library at Washburn Observatory. We will be hearing from Professor John Hawks about his work in biological anthropology. Professor Hawks studies human evolution and has taught many different classes on biological anthropology. As always, food will be provided, and anyone is welcome to come; no need to RSVP. We hope to see you there!

Thursday, January 31, 2013 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  Varsity Hall, Union South  The Public Service Fair is an annual event that hosts over 70 representatives from non-profit organizations and governmental agencies showcasing their current volunteer, internship, and/or employment opportunities.  Students interested in full or part time employment, summer or semester-long internships, and local, national, or international volunteer opportunities are encouraged to attend! Senior Honors Thesis and L&S Honors Thesis Grant Info Session

February 4 at 4:30 p.m. Honors Program Library, Washburn Observatory If you are planning to start a Senior Honors Thesis next year this session is for you! Join us to learn more about the Senior Honors Thesis and funding opportunities for the coming academic year (2013-14), particularly the Summer Senior Honors Thesis Grant. A representative from the Writing Center will also be available to talk about their resources. 

New Advising Hours for Spring Semester

The L&S Honors Program Advisors will be available for drop-in advising this spring semester from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Mondays and 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays  and Thursdays in the Honors Program Office in Washburn Observatory. In addition, we will have  chat advising  available Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m., and Monday-Thursday from 8:00-9:00 p.m.  Remember that drop-in advising and chat advising are great ways to get your quick questions answered. For longer questions or issues, please call our office at 608-262-2984 to set up an individual advising appointment with an honors advisor.

NOW HIRING!!! The L&S Honors Program is looking for Honors Peer Advisors for SOAR 2013!

We are seeking student Peer Advisors to join our team!  Honors Peer Advisors work in a dynamic team setting with  a professional academic advisor to provide one-on-one and small group advising related to academic and co-curricular life at UW-Madison.  Peer advisors help new students explore a range of academic options, select and register for fall classes, develop and implement additional advising resources and Honors programming, and participate in ongoing professional development.  Peer advisors will explain how to use enrollment tools, provide campus information and model successful student behavior.  Peer advisors need to be able to work independently and with others in a fast-paced environment that includes on-the-job problem solving and attention to a wide variety of daily tasks. Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities is accepting applications and submissions

The following positions are available: reviewers (prose, poetry, essays, and art), copy editors, art editor, layout assistants, publicity director, marketing assistants, and financial advisor. The 2013-2014 Leadership Trust Award Application is now available

The Leadership Trust Award provides up to two (2) students with an award equal to two (2) semesters of resident, full-time tuition (currently totaling over $9,500) plus project funds up to but not to exceed $3,000 as justified in the submitted project budget.  The awards and the project funds provided are intended to be used by the student(s) to help plan, develop, and implement projects designed to improve the UW-Madison, the university community, and/or the university student body.  The award winner(s) must identify a UW-Madison faculty advisor who will serve in an advisory/resource capacity.  The award winner(s) must also submit progress reports to the L&S Faculty Honors Committee as required. 2013 Welton Honors Sophomore Summer Apprenticeship Research Grants

The L&S Honors Program is pleased to announce the twentieth year of funding for the Welton Honors Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grants. These competitive grants are intended to subsidize student involvement in faculty research projects during the summer of 2013.
