The Schools of Hope Project is Seeking AmeriCorps State Members

AmeriCorps is a national program that places members in areas of need in the United States to develop or enhance programs and strengthen communities.  As part of the Schools of Hope Project you would be working on a team of AmeriCorps members in the Madison area based at local elementary schools and community centers to provide literacy and math activities and volunteer support for children.  For more information please see below.

Information session in the Round Room of the Morgridge Center, Tuesday, March 12 from 12:00-12:30 p.m. with an additional drop-in hours and Q&A from 12:30-2:00 p.m.

 What requirements are there to be an AmeriCorps member?
  • must be 18 years or older
  • must be U.S. Citizen or have permanent resident status
  • ability to pass background check

Summer AmeriCorps positions, June 12 – August 6, 2013
We are recruiting full-time members to work for a term of eight weeks in a classroom setting and with a variety of community-based programs to improve the literacy and math skills of young children.  Most of the members’ time will be spent supporting the Madison Metropolitan School District’s K-Ready Program, which is a six-week program that was developed to address the academic needs of struggling MMSD students entering Kindergarten each fall. This is a great opportunity to work directly with classroom teachers and students.  Applicants should demonstrate knowledge or interest in working with diverse populations. Some previous experience working with children is preferred.

What does the position pay?
  • Summer members are paid a total of $2,154 for their term of service; paid twice a month.
What benefits will I receive?
  • Members are eligible to receive a $1,175 education award upon successful completion of the summer term.

Full-year AmeriCorps positions, August 21, 2013 – August 5, 2014
As a full-year AmeriCorps member for the Schools of Hope Project you would be serving as a tutor coordinator at local elementary schools.  This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the academic success of the community's children while developing and using your community building, education and project management skills.  These positions require a commitment of 12 months of service. 

What does the position pay?
  • Full-year members are paid a total of $12,100 for their year of service; paid twice a month.
What benefits will I receive?
In addition to your living allowance, AmeriCorps positions provide the following benefits:
  • Members are eligible to receive a $5,550 education award upon completion of one year of service
  • Health plan (will NOT cover family members)
  • Reimbursement for child care expenses (must meet eligibility requirements)

Spanish Bilingual Tutor positions, September 23, 2013 – June 12, 2014
As an AmeriCorps bilingual tutor, you will serve 8 hours/week as a Spanish bilingual literacy tutor in a Madison-area elementary school. Members will work one-on-one with teacher-identified students to improve literacy skills. The schedule during this time is flexible, depending on individual school needs and AmeriCorps member schedule, though all tutoring will take place during the school day (8am - 4pm). This is a great opportunity to work directly with students and classroom teachers. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge or interest in working with diverse populations. Some previous experience working with children is preferred.
