FH King Students for Sustainable Agriculture is Hiring

FH King is hiring for three positions right now, two garden assistants and one administrative director. 

In addition to this there is an open bee keeping internship!

1.) Garden Assistants

FH King is hiring two Garden Assistants for the 2013 growing season!  Applications due 12:00p.m. on April 5, 2013.

The Garden Assistant will help the two Garden Directors with all aspects of the garden including planning, planting, maintenance, irrigation, propagation, harvesting, pest management, bee keeping and all other aspects of land stewardship. The Garden Assistant helps the Garden Directors organize volunteer participation at the garden and greenhouse. The Garden Assistant will additionally be responsible for helping to keep adequate records and assisting in replacement training. The position starts in April when garden tilling and planting begin. Once planting begins in the garden, field work continues through late October. From June through October, you would assist in the distribution of produce to students at weekly handouts on campus. Day to day work requires balancing a number of responsibilities, directing volunteers, and physical labor. This position is a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing small-scale farming and getting involved in sustainable agriculture! Though previous experience with growing food and working with others is preferred, it is not required.

This is a student hourly position meaning that one must be a registered UW-Madison student to apply. The position will begin after training in early April. The hourly rate is $9.19. This is a 10 hour per week position in the spring and will switch to 20 hours per week in Mid-May. The position will run through the beginning of the 2011 school year. Hours are not based on a set schedule and are flexible to accommodate to student’s schedules.

Garden Assistant Specific Responsibilities:

•  Working closely with both Garden Directors and providing general support
•  Greenhouse seedling propagation and supplies 
•  Farm maintenance
•  Garden Production
•  Land management
•  Facilities management
•  Soil fertility  
•  Garden visioning
•  Distribution of produce to students and food pantries and soup kitchens

2.) Administrative Director

FH King is hiring one administrative director for the year.  Applications are due  12:00p.m. on March 29, 2013.

The Administrative Director helps facilitate other directors’ activities and provides other support where needed throughout F.H. King. This is an awesome opportunity to learn how to run a growing organization and collaborate with other students in a leadership role.  Not only this, but this is a position that you can truly make your own, from focusing on creative ways to outreach, helping the program director plan new workshops, and even leading workshops from time to time. Since there is so much freedom within the job, we are looking for someone with lots of initiative and independence. The Administrative Director acts as the primary contact of the organization, specifically with the Faculty Advisors, Advisory Board, or other UW departments. S/he also will get an intimate knowledge of the structure and functioning of ASM.  In addition TheAdministrative Director facilitates the weekly meetings among the Board of Directors.

This is a student hourly position meaning that one must be a registered UW-Madison student to apply. We are looking for an individual who can commit at least one year (Summer ’13, Fall ’13, Spring ‘14) to the organization. The position will begin immediately after hiring commences in mid-April, with training in early April. The hourly rate is $9.19. The position is limited to 12 hours per week. Hours are not based on a set schedule and are flexible to accommodate to student’s schedules.

3.) Beekeeping Internship

Interested in learning how to raise honey bees?
Already know something (or a lot) about it?
Great!
Applications due 12:00p.m. on April 5, 2013.
We would love to have an interested individual to help in hive care, to spread the word about our hard working bees, and contribute to a Honey Bee Handbook for future generations of F.H. Kingers.

Duties will include weekly hive inspections to check on bee health and gauge honey production. You will learn hive terminology, and gain the ability to light the smoker and put on beekeeping equipment. Interns will also be required to give tours to interested members of the student body and general public.
