Schools of Hope Recruiting Summer & Year-Long Americorps Members

AmeriCorps is a national program that places members in areas of need in the United States to develop or enhance programs and strengthen communities. The Schools of Hope program in Madison works with local elementary schools and community centers to provide literacy and math activities and volunteer support for children. There are positions available for Summer (June 11 - August 5, 2014) and full year (August 20, 2014 - August 4, 2015). Read more about each position!

The Summer position will be full-time work with a variety of community-based programs to improve literacy and math skills of young children in the Madison Metropolitan School District's 4K Summer School Program, which is a 6-week program developed to address academic needs of struggling MMSD students entering Kindergarten each fall. This is a great opportunity to work directly with classroom teachers and students. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge or interest in working with diverse populations. Some previous experience working with children is preferred. Summer members are paid $2,154 and are eligible for a $1,175 education award upon successful completion of the summer term. 

The full-year position will be serving as a tutor coordinator at local elementary schools. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the academic success of the community's children while developing and using your community building, education, and project management skills. This position pays $12,100 and members are eligible for a $5,645 education award upon completion of the year of service. A health plan (not covering family members) is also included, as well as reimbursement for child care expenses if eligibility requirements are met.

There is a third position available that will serve from September 22, 2014 - June 12, 2015 as a Spanish Bilingual tutor. This position works for 8 hours/week in a Madison-area elementary school. Members work one-on-one with teacher-identified students to improve literacy skills. The schedule during this time is flexible, depending on individual school needs and Americorps member schedule, though all tutoring will take place during the school day (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.). This is a great opportunity to work with classroom students and teachers and applicants should demonstrate knowledge or interest in working with diverse populations. Some previous experience working with children is preferred. Applications MUST be proficient in both Spanish and English. Members will be paid $2,154 for their service and will be eligible to receive a $1,195 education award upon successful completion.
