2017-18 Newman Civic Fellowship
UW-Madison undergraduates are encouraged to apply for the Newman Civic Fellowship, a nationwide
award honoring community-committed students.
The Fellowship recognizes
and supports students with at least one year remaining in their
undergraduate education who have demonstrated an investment in finding
solutions for challenges facing communities. Recipients are not only honored
for previous work but receive training and resources to further their passions
and help them develop strategies for social change. Students do not receive a
scholarship, but rather access to major leadership, learning and networking
opportunities detailed here.
Interested UW-Madison
students can nominate themselves by completing this application.
The deadline to apply is Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 at 11:59
pm CST.
UW-Madison will select
one undergraduate student to serve as a 2017-18 Newman Civic Fellow. The Newman
Civic Fellowship honors the leadership legacy of Frank Newman, a lifelong
champion for education, by recognizing community-committed students who meet
these criteria:
- Engage in collaborative action with others from campus or from surrounding communities in order to create long-term social change.
- Take action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization.
- Demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement.
The Newman Civic
Fellowship is made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation
and Newman’s Own Foundation. Administrative support comes from Campus Compact.
Campus Compact is a coalition of colleges and universities advancing the public
purpose of higher education by deepening schools’ ability to improve community
life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility.
