Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) awards


Students are invited to attend upcoming information sessions & open houses to learn more about Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) awards for the study of critical and less commonly taught languages at UW-Madison.

FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UW's area & international studies centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and area or international studies competencies.

The application for Summer 2019 and Academic Year 2019-2020 FLAS awards is open now!

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training. The application deadline is February 11, 2019.

There will be six information sessions for students interested in applying for a FLAS award (please note different times for graduate & undergraduate applicants). The content of the sessions will be identical; students need only attend one session:

Monday, November 26, 2018 (in 336 Ingraham Hall):
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for undergraduate student applicants
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. for graduate applicants*

Tuesday, November 27, 2018 (in 336 Ingraham Hall):
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for undergraduate student applicants
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. for graduate applicants*

Thursday, December 6, 2018 (in 336 Ingraham Hall):
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for undergraduate student applicants
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. for graduate applicants*

Thursday, January 24, 2019 (in 336 Ingraham Hall):
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for undergraduate student applicants
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. for graduate applicants*

Tuesday, January 29, 2019 (in 336 Ingraham Hall):
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for undergraduate student applicants
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. for graduate applicants*

Wednesday, January 30, 2019 (in 336 Ingraham Hall):
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for undergraduate student applicants
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. for graduate applicants*

*Graduating seniors who plan to be in graduate or professional school at UW next year should attend the session for graduate applicants.

In addition, there will be 7 open houses where applicants and interested students are welcome to stop by for additional information and with any questions about the awards, the application process, etc:

November 29, December 3 & 12, January 25 & 31, and February 4 & 6
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in 301 Ingraham Hall
