Welton Sophomore Apprenticeship Information

College of Letters & Science Honors Program
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Are you interested in research on campus, but not sure where to start? Are you currently working with a faculty member on research, and looking for a way to continue your progress over the summer? The Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant is the perfect opportunity to get involved with research for the first time, or to build on your current experience, by working with a faculty member over the summer.

Who is eligible?
Students complete an apprenticeship either in the summer between their first and second years, or their second and third years.

What is the apprenticeship?
Through the generosity of the Welton Family Foundation, the Brittingham Trust, and the Knapp Bequest Fund, apprentices are paid a $2500 stipend to work with a faculty member. That faculty member agrees to teach you about how to do research, and you get valuable experience while also getting paid!

How do I apply?

Identify a faculty mentor. The application is a joint application between you and the faculty member, so it helps to identify someone early on. Not sure who to ask? The info sessions will also have helpful pointers on identifying willing faculty mentors.

Third, apply by Wednesday, March 13, 2019 before 11:59 p.m. The application is available here.

Contact Matt Kohlstedt with any questions, or to set up a separate time to meet if you cannot attend any of the information sessions.
