Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship

Are you interested in research on campus, but not sure where to start? Are you currently working with a faculty member on research, and looking for a way to continue your progress over the summer? The Welton Honors Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant is the perfect opportunity to get involved with research for the first time - or to build on your current experience - by working with a faculty member over the summer.

Through the generosity of the Welton Family Foundation, the Brittingham Trust, and the Knapp Bequest Fund, apprentices are paid $2000 to work about 20 hours a week for a faculty member. That faculty member agrees to teach you about how to do research, and you get valuable experience while also getting paid! Up to 27 apprenticeships will be awarded in 2014.

Students usually complete an apprenticeship in the summer between their first and second years, or their second and third years.

After attending one of the information sessions, identify a faculty mentor to work with. The application is a joint application between you and the faculty member, so it helps to identify someone early on. Uncertain what faculty member to ask? You can email Matt Kohlstedt at mkohlstedt@wisc.edu for help. (The info sessions will also have helpful tips.)

The application is due by Wednesday, March 5, 2014 before 4:15 p.m. You can find the application here or you can get a copy of the application at the info sessions.
