Informational Workshop on Trewartha and Mark Mensink Research Grants

Thanks to the generosity of several donors, the Letters & Science Honors Program offers a number of grants to help recipients fund their senior thesis research.  This fall semester, the grants include: the  Trewartha Undergraduate Honors Research Grant  and the  Mark Mensink Honors Research Grant . Wednesday, September 21: 1:20-2:20 pm Thursday, September 22: 10:00-11:00 am          Both workshops will be held in the Washburn Observatory conference room. (Come in the main entrance, walk towards the east side of the building. The conference room is at the northeast corner of the building.) Attendance is not mandatory but strongly encouraged. There is no need to RSVP. The workshops are staggered to try and work around class schedules, but if you need to come late or leave early that's okay! 2016-2017 Travel Awards for Study Abroad

Up to one (1) $1250 Abraham S. Burack Scholarship; one (1) $1250 Kurz Scholarship; and two (2) $1250 Directors’ Fund Travel Grants will be awarded to eligible L&S Honors Students participating in one of the University of Wisconsin’s Academic Study Abroad Programs during the 2016-2017 academic year. Students studying for a summer, semester, or a year abroad are eligible for these awards; however, preference for award is given to students participating in semester or year abroad programs. Review of applications and selection of the scholarship recipient will be conducted by the L&S Honors Program Faculty Honors Committee. Submission of this application will make the applicant eligible for any of the awards. Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant

A re you interested in research on campus, but not sure where to start? Are you currently working with a faculty member on research, and looking for a way to continue your progress over the summer? The Welton Summer Sophomore Apprenticeship Research Grant is the perfect opportunity to get involved with research for the first time, or to build on your current experience, by working with a faculty member over the summer. Who is eligible? Students complete an apprenticeship either in the summer between their first and second years, or their second and third years. What is the apprenticeship? Through the generosity of the Welton Family Foundation, the Brittingham Trust, and the Knapp Bequest Fund, apprentices are paid a $2500 stipend to work with a faculty member. CfLI looking for student Wisconsin Experience Grant committee members

The Center for Leadership & Involvement is looking for interested students to participate as committee members for the Wisconsin Experience Grant . The committee meets bi-weekly to deliberate on submitted applications for funding from registered student organizations. The grant awards these funds to student organizations for events that support the components of the Wisconsin Experience. Committee members are responsible for reviewing submitted applications following each application deadline (the 1 st and 15 th of each month during the academic year). The committee then meets to discuss the merits of each grant application and determine which organizations receive funding based on the grant’s requirements. The committee will meet on Wednesdays between 3:00pm and 4:30pm in the Red Gym (716 Langdon Street) , with the first meeting being on Wednesday, September 16 . Erin Crawley, the campus Fulbright program advisor, will hold an information session for students interested in learning more about the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship program and the   campus competition process on April 16. Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grants

The Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grant enables students to undertake more demanding and extensive senior thesis research projects than might otherwise be possible. Besides recognition of an excellent thesis proposal, award recipients are provided an award of up to $3,000 to cover research-related expenses. These resources may enable students to travel to archives or research sites, or to initiate other research activities that require special funding. Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment

The Office of the Provost is soliciting proposals from faculty, staff, and students for the spring 2015 Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment competition. This endowment helps foster the Wisconsin Idea, the philosophy that the knowledge, ideas and solutions generated at the University benefit the people of Wisconsin, our nation and the world. Proposals are encouraged for new outreach and public engagement activities that partner with community and off-campus organizations to extend and apply our research, education and clinical knowledge to help solve problems or take advantage of opportunities. Projects may begin on or after July 1, 2015 and last up to three years. This year, the committee will pilot an approach that will award up to ten mini-grants of $4,000 or less, in addition to larger awards of up to $120,000. 2014 Iwanter Prize

The annual Iwanter Prize provides an unrestricted $2,000 award to one graduating senior who, through a senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. The award is made possible by a gift to the UW Foundation by Sidney E. Iwanter, an alumnus of the College of Letters & Science (BA History, 1971).  The application deadline is May 7, 2014 at 5:00 pm. Japan-America Student Conference

Initiated in 1934, Japan-America Student Conference ( JASC ) boasts  alumni  such as Henry Kissinger and brings together 72 student leaders from Japan and the U.S. for a month with the goal of improving U.S.-Japan relations. Delegates will delve into critical topics ranging from Art & Identity to Immigration to Technological Advancements to Native American Experience, learn firsthand from established leaders and field trips, build their professional network through networking receptions, and forge life-long friendships. Do you have plans to participate in a professional conference? Read more about the Bromley Research Conference Travel Grant ! The grants are awarded based on a competitive application process to eligible L&S Honors students for presentation and/or attendance at regional or national professional conferences. Review of applications and selection of Bromley Research Conference Travel Grant recipients will be conducted by the L&S Faculty Honors Committee.    - Grants awarded for presentation at regional or national conferences provide up to $500 to the recipients.   - Grants awarded solely for attendance at regional or national conferences provide up to $250 to the recipients.  Priority for awards is given to applications requesting support for presentation at professional conferences.
