Research Opportunities Abroad for Summer 2014

Get hands on research experience in Germany, Finland, or Japan this summer! There are several research grant opportunities available for undergraduates, and there are no language requirements. Check out some of the opportunities below!


NanoJapan International Research Experience for Undergraduates
Location: Research labs throughout Japan
Description: The NanoJapan Program is a 12-week, summer research internship focusing on Terahertz (THz) Dynamics in Nanostructures that is open to freshman and sophomore engineering and physics students from universities nationwide. Generously supported by an NSF Partnerships for International Research & Education (NSF-PIRE) grant, this summer program seeks to cultivate interest in nanotechnology among young U.S. undergraduate students, especially those from underrepresented groups, and encourages such students to pursue graduate study and academic research in the physical sciences. To be eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents an each year up to 12 students will be selected to participate.
Fields: Nanotechnology, engineering, physics
Eligibility: Freshmen or sophomores, U.S. citizen/permanent resident, interest in nanotechnology
Funding: Program covers airfare, orientations/meetings, and participants receive an NSF stipend of up to $4,500 for other expenses.
Dates: May 15 to August 1, 2014 (note that they will help coordinate proctoring of exams for students unable to arrange completing early if they have exams after the program start)

Aalto University Science Institute Internships
Location: Espoo, Finland
Description: The Aalto Science Institute internship program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate first-hand in topical research, to interact with the premier research groups at Aalto University, and to network in an international environment.
Fields: physics, computational neuroscience, nanophysics, computer science & engineering, mathematics,
Eligibility: Sophomore to senior, strong academic background and relevant coursework/experience
Funding: Interns receive a minimum salary of 1600 euros/month
Dates: Approximately June 1 – August 31, 2014

RWTH Aachen University Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
Location: Aachen, Germany
Description: The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at RWTH Aachen University fosters research partnerships between qualified undergraduates from top US and Canadian universities and research faculty at our university. The program is specifically designed for students who wish to attain hands-on experience in fundamental research at one of the top universities of science and technology worldwide. Before their research begins students will take an intensive German language course.
Fields: Biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, computer science, economics, electrical engineering, linguistics, materials engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, health sciences, geological engineering, physics, political science, psychology, sociology, textiles.
Eligibility: Undergraduate, U.S. or Canadian citizen/permanent resident, 3.2 GPA
Funding: 60 students will be selected and 30 will receive scholarships of 1,850 euros on a merit basis.
Dates: May 19 to July 25, 2014

DAAD Research Internships in Science & Engineering (RISE)
Location: research labs throughout Germany
Description: RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for Bachelor students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English.

Eligibility: Junior or senior (graduating Dec 2014 or later), enrolled at U.S./Canadian/UK institution (any citizenship)
Funding: All selected students (up to ~300) will receive scholarships of about 650 euros/month
Dates: Varies. Students start between May 15 and early July and stay for 8-12 weeks total.

UAS7 German Universities of Applied Sciences Internship Program
Location: One of 7 applied science universities in Germany (Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Munster or Osnabruck
Description: The Internship Program (IP) is a new option for students interested in hands-on research opportunities at a German university of applied sciences.  Internships offered by UAS7 member faculty allow IP participants to work alongside teams in our campus research laboratories and institutes.
Fields: Aeronautical Engineering, Architecture, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Ergonomics, Food & Nutritional Science, Life Sciences, Logistics & Management, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Nanoscience, Physics
Eligibility: Prior lab experience, enrolled at U.S. or Canadian university (any citizenship), strong academic record.
Funding: Successful applicants receive a UAS7 Travel Scholarship for transatlantic travel expenses.
Dates: Varies by research project. Summer and fall research available.
Deadline: February 15, 2014

University of Tokyo Research Internship Program
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Description: The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) is a summer internship program for students majoring in natural science and other relevant fields. The program will provide students with an opportunity to gain the experience of "real graduate-school life" or "research-centered life." UTRIP is a gateway to pursuing an advanced degree and experiencing academic life at Todai. 
Fields: Natural sciences, engineering, related fields
Eligibility: Sophomores to seniors (including May 2014 graduates), interest in pursuing graduate studies in the sciences
Funding: Two grants are available to help with expenses
Dates: June 12 to July 23 OR July 1 to August 3, 2014
Deadline: March 3, 2014
