On a broad and verdant plain between two of France's most storied rivers, the Loire Valley village of Pontlevoy and its Benedictine abbey have stood watch for almost 1000 years.  In the centuries of their symbiosis, the town and its monumental center of learning have invited searchers and scholars from all over Europe and beyond to come and live lives of reflection, service and engagement.

Today that tradition lives on in an academic and cultural immersion program for American university students, The Village: A European Journey without End.  (Facebook: Globalizedu)

Courses in French, History, Art History, Psychology and Comparative Literature will be among the most moving you ever take not just because The Village brings these subjects to life in such unforgettable ways.  But also because your French neighbors will invite you into a meeting with their world and their lives that transcends any kind of academic "learning outcome."  There may be just 1300 people who live permanently in Pontelvoy. But when December comes, you'll leave this place feeling like you met the whole world among its ancient towers and stone walls.

The Village's courses foster a culture of active, communal learning. All of our courses feature service-learning in conjunction with our academic goals.  All of them also require travel in France or across Europe. Do you want to study the Second World War and the Holocaust from our village, to Paris, to Omaha Beach, Berlin, Prague and onto Auschwitz-Birkenau?  Or do you love the idea of learning about Renaissance art as you study in museums from Paris to Venice, Florence and Rome? If so, you will love how and what and where we teach.

To make The Village even more affordable, UW Madison students are eligible to apply for the Henry Mackaman Scholarship, sponsored by Globalizedu. These awards range from $1000 - $2000 each, and there are 15 of them to be allocated to UW Madison students for this fall.

Please note that this is NOT an IAP study abroad program. Credits will have to go through the transfer credit process, contact the Office of Admission to find out more about that process.
