Consider Taking Molecular Ecology 624
Molecular genetics techniques have revolutionized the way biologists address questions in evolution, ecology and conservation. This course surveys recent developments in the field of Molecular Ecology and provides the theoretical background necessary to conduct research in this topic. This is an upper division undergraduate and graduate level course, with and honors option, covering three hours of instruction per week.
Course Objectives: The main objectives of the course are to help students 1) develop an understanding of the importance of genetic diversity to species biology, 2) understand how different ecological and evolutionary processes shape genetic variation, 3) learn which genetic methods are appropriate for answering scientific questions, and 4) gain expertise in visualizing and interpreting genetic data.
Learn how to answer questions such as:
- How are different organisms related?
- How do species respond to past and present environmental change?
- Does our micobiome vary and why?
- How do we evaluate the genetic basis of disease or important agricultural traits?
The course is taught by Sean Schoville. Sean's work has been inspired by the natural history of species and his fascination with how they overcome challenges in the natural world. One of his main goals as a scientist is to cultivate this appreciation and passion for nature, in society at large.
