Do you enjoy writing? Are you looking for scholarships for next school year? Enter the UW System Liberal Arts Essay Competition! This year's competition focuses on the purpose of higher education. Students in the competition are to write a letter to the editor of their hometown paper that stakes out and defends a certain position. (Please see link at the bottom for the exact prompt). The Madison campus will select 2-3 semi-finalists who will each receive a $500 scholarship and then be entered into the system-wide competition for two $2,000 awards. The  100-Hour Challenge  is one of UW-Madison's signature entrepreneurial contest.  In a nutshell, the event challenges teams of students to use donated materials from SWAP to come up with a new product idea in 100 hours (essentially over a long weekend). The teams then make a short video pitch of their big idea for the chance to win prize money! The contest is administered by the Entrepreneurial Residential Learning Community at UW-Madison and is open to all currently enrolled UW-Madison students.  SWAP materials pick-up day is Thursday, Nov. 12th in Sellery Hall , with final videos needing to be uploaded by mid-day Monday, Nov. 16th .  See the 100-Hour Challenge webpage for contest rules, technical requirements, and FAQs.

The Wisconsin Idea Fellowship (WIF) offers undergraduate students the opportunity to develop innovative projects in collaboration with faculty or instructional staff and a community partner, to work towards solving a challenge in the community -- while enhancing student learning. Undergraduate students with at least sophomore standing can submit a project proposal that addresses a need identified by the community. They must select a faculty mentor and community partner to provide project support and partnership. Project areas include (but are not limited to): community development global health economic development participation in the arts education environmental issues criminal justice hunger poverty alleviation  Students can apply for up to $7,000 per project in addition to receiving three academic credits . The Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge (WESC) is a student competition aimed at advancing creative ideas in energy and environmental sustainability. The 2015-16 WESC will be held on November 13 at the 2015 Energy Hub Conference. More than $10,000 in prizes will be awarded to students competing in the WESC. All students need to do is submit a proposal for an idea to improve energy or sustainability! They can work in teams, with faculty or alone. The topic can be food, water, transportation, education, social initiatives, new gadgets, anything! The national Collegiate Wind Competition combines the expertise of students from a variety of engineering, business, communications, and social science programs, and challenges them to utilize their individual skills to develop state-of-the-art wind energy solutions as a team.  Undergraduate students from all majors and disciplines are welcome to apply for the 2015-2016 school year. Team members will be selected based on the diversity of backgrounds and interests. The Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee is accepting submissions for the 87th Annual Student Art Show! Currently enrolled UW-Madison students (undergraduate, graduate, and special students earning credit(s) towards a degree) of ALL majors are encouraged to submit original artwork for consideration. They are looking for student artists from all areas of the UW-Madison campus, working in all types of media. It is a great opportunity to: experience a juried selection process, potentially exhibit artwork in a group show, and possibly receive a cash or purchase award.   Artists are invited to submit a maximum of three pieces for consideration.  Submission fees are only $1 per work!
