Call for Nominations: 2019 Distinguished Honors Faculty Award

What was your best honors class experience? Did you have an honors professor who inspired you or changed the way you view the world? Want to thank an honors faculty member for his/her dedication to teaching honors students?  Nominate a faculty member for the 2019 Distinguished Honors Faculty Award. The award is given to a faculty member who had done outstanding work to teach and work with honors students.  If you had classmates who were also impacted positively by working with this faculty member, consider encouraging them to submit a nomination as well. Bromley Research Conference Travel Grants are awarded based on a competitive application process to eligible L&S Honors students for presentation and/or attendance at regional or national professional conferences.   Review of applications and selection of Bromley Research Conference Travel Grant recipients will be conducted by the L&S Faculty Honors Committee. - Grants awarded for presentation at regional or national conferences provide up to $500 to the recipients. - Grants awarded solely for attendance at regional or national conferences provide up to $250 to the recipients. Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) are fellowships funded by the U.S. Department of Education intended to aid students in learning a foreign language. The competiton is now open. Students are invited to submit applications for Summer 2016 and Academic Year 2016-2017 fellowships and awards.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. 2015-2016 UW System Liberal Arts Essay Competition

Do you enjoy writing? Are you looking for scholarships for next school year? Enter the UW System Liberal Arts Essay Competition! This year's competition focuses on the purpose of higher education. Students in the competition are to write a letter to the editor of their hometown paper that stakes out and defends a certain position. (Please see link at the bottom for the exact prompt). The Madison campus will select 2-3 semi-finalists who will each receive a $500 scholarship and then be entered into the system-wide competition for two $2,000 awards. Trewartha/Mensink/Haney Honors Senior Thesis Research Grants 2015

Thanks to the generosity of several donors, the Letters and Science Honors Program offers a number of grants to help recipients fund their senior thesis research.  This year, the grants include: the Trewartha Undergraduate Honors Research Grant ,  the Mark Mensink Honors Research Grant ,  & the Ann J. Call for Applications: 2015 Iwanter Prize

The UW-Madison Center for the Humanities Presents, The Iwanter Prize.  Application Deadline: May 1, 2015 The annual Iwanter Prize provides an unrestricted $2,000 award to one graduating senior who, through a senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. Applications for the Iwanter prize may come directly from students, but must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the thesis advisor. Eligibility is restricted to seniors graduating from the College of Letters and Science who are receiving a degree with a major in a humanities discipline. Students graduating in spring or summer may submit advanced draft versions of the thesis. Application information can be found on the Center for the Humanities Website .

Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grants

The Honors Senior Thesis Summer Research Grant enables students to undertake more demanding and extensive senior thesis research projects than might otherwise be possible. Besides recognition of an excellent thesis proposal, award recipients are provided an award of up to $3,000 to cover research-related expenses. These resources may enable students to travel to archives or research sites, or to initiate other research activities that require special funding. University Bookstore Academic Excellence Awards

The University Book Store Academic Excellence Awards provide $1000 to undergraduate students who have distinguished themselves by completing outstanding projects, such as a senior thesis, at UW-Madison.  Students must be enrolled in a degree program during the 2014-15 academic year (December 2014 graduates may apply).  Up to twenty awards are given annually. Eligible projects include: research papers in all fields creative arts projects, such as writing, media arts, visual or performing arts a self-contained section of a larger project (with statement explaining full project and sections yet to be completed) in cases of jointly authored or produced submissions, each person's contribution must be clearly stated. If the applicant was part of a research team, the applicant's role and contributions to the project must be delineated. Sophomore Research Fellowships

Funded by a one-year University of Wisconsin System Undergraduate Research & Discovery Grant, the Sophomore Research Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff. Approximately 15 awards are available. The student researcher receives $2,500, and faculty/staff research advisor receives $500 to help offset research costs (e.g., supplies, faculty or student travel related to the project).  To be eligible for this award you must be a sophomore or a freshman who will have more than 24 credits after May of the current academic year or a transfer student in their first year of attendance at UW-Madison and have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or above.  Application Deadline: March 9, 2015 More information on the proposal and application as well as the selection process can be found here.

Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research

The Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff. Approximately 105 Hilldale awards are available each year. The student researcher receives $3,000, and faculty/staff research advisor receives $500 to help offset research costs (e.g., supplies, faculty or student travel related to the project). At time of application research mentors can ask for an additional $500 (up to $1,000 total) if exceptional circumstances apply (for example, if student travel is necessary to conduct the research). To be eligible for this award, students must: have at least junior standing at time of application plan a collaborative research project with a UW-Madison faculty/staff plan to graduate after May of the application year while there is no minimum GPA to apply, projects proposed by students with a cumulative GPA of  3.2 or lower typically are not as competitive ...

UW-Madison New Arts Venture Challenge

The UW–Madison New Arts Venture Challenge is a campus-wide competition encouraging new thinking and innovative ideas. Entrants will develop and submit a thorough proposal for an arts event, exhibition, series, commercial venture, or other artistic projects. Proposals should demonstrate creativity, innovation, added value to the arts, and potential for success. After the top four finalists are selected, they will present their projects to a panel of judges. The first prize award is $2,000 and $500 for second prize (up to three awards for second).  The deadline in April 14, 2015. Leadership Trust Application

Do you have a great idea to enhance the UW-Madison campus and/or the larger Madison community? Apply for the L&S Honors Leadership Trust Award! The Leadership Trust Award provides up to two students with an award equal to two semesters of resident, full-time tuition plus project funds up to but not to exceed $3,000 as justified in the submitted project budget. The awards and the project funds provided are intended to be used by the student(s) to help plan, develop, and implement projects designed to improve the UW-Madison, the university community, and/or the university student body.
