Now Hiring Peer Advisors for SOAR 2014

The L&S Honors Program is now hiring Honors Peer Advisors for SOAR 2014! Honors Peer Advisors work in a dynamic team setting with a professional academic advisor to provide one-on-one and small group advising related to academic and co-curricular life at UW-Madison during SOAR. Peer Advisors help students select and register for fall classes, as well as develop and implement additional advising resources and Honors programming.

Hilldale and Holstrom Scholarships

Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowships and Holstrom Environmental Scholarships  provide support for collaborative research between undergraduate students and faculty or research/instructional academic staff members. Each provides a grant of $3,000 to the student and $500 to the faculty/staff mentor (up to $1,000 under exceptional circumstances) to help offset research costs. Students must have at least junior standing at the time of application, and the Holstrom Scholarships require an environmental focus.  The application deadline is February 17, 2014 . University Bookstore Academic Excellence Awards

The University Bookstore Academic Excellence Awards provide $1,000 to undergraduate students who have distinguished themselves by completing outstanding projects, such as a senior thesis, at UW-Madison. Students must be enrolled in a degree program during the 2013-2014 academic year (but December 2013 graduates may apply).  Applications are due March 24, 2014 . Spring LSAT Prep Course

Thinking about applying to law school? L&S is offering a low-cost mini LSAT Prep course this spring! It will include 22 hours of preparation for the content of the LSAT (reading comprehension,logical reasoning, and analytical reading). Opportunities at the International

Are you interested in biology and writing? The International is a news website that features articles from a variety of sources on issues of public interest. We are currently looking for reporters of biology topics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Interns are provided with training on how to write for the online environment while maintaining high journalistic standards, a skill that proves invaluable for anyone who may want to break into journalism or write a blog in the future. Leadership Trust Workshop and Application

Do you have a great idea to enhance the UW-Madison campus and/or the larger Madison community? Apply for the L&S Honors Leadership Trust Award! The Leadership Trust Award provides up to two students with an award equal to two semesters of resident, full-time tuition plus project funds up to but not to exceed $3,000 as justified in the submitted project budget. The awards and the project funds provided are intended to be used by the student(s) to help plan, develop, and implement projects designed to improve the UW-Madison, the university community, and/or the university student body. To learn more, attend an informational workshop on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the Washburn Observatory conference room! (Attendance is not required for the application or award, but it will help!)

International and World History at Columbia University and London School of Economics

Pre-Med Scholarship Announcement

The application for the Mathea and Lawless Louis Mollere Scholarship is now open. This scholarship provides $4,500 for the Spring semester for two Letters & Science juniors or seniors with financial need, who are taking pre-med course work, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.  There is a preference for students who demonstrate breadth outside of the biological sciences. The donor prefers that the recipients do not smoke, or use alcohol or drugs. Complete applications are due on December 6, 2013 and require short answer questions, a resume, and 2 recommendations.

STEM Scholarships for Currently Enrolled Freshmen

We are happy to announce a new scholarship opportunity for current freshmen who are intending to pursue STEM careers. Thermo Fisher Scientific selected UW-Madison and the College of Letters & Science to select recipients.  (The College of Engineering was also selected.) Eligible first-year students in the College of Letters & Science must be planning for careers in one of the following: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Molecular Biology,Geophysics, Geology, Zoology or Mathematics.  Students can  apply now  through December 2, 2013 .

The Madison Undergraduate Society for English (MUSE) is now accepting submissions to Literati 2014! Literati is an undergraduate conference on language, literature, and the humanities that accepts papers in literary criticism, creative writing, and digital projects.

Biocore info session!

Thinking about applying for Biocore ? Join us on Tuesday, November 19th at 4:45 in the conference room in Washburn Observatory for a special honors program info session about Biocore.  Janet Batzli, Associate Director of the Biocore program, will be there to tell you more about the program and answer your questions. She will be able to talk to you about what the Biocore experience is like, how the application process works, and why you might want to do it! 

NSEP-Boren Undergraduate Scholarship

Leah Mason, Assistant Director, Project GO & Language Training Centers IIE will hold an information session on campus about the Boren Scholarships.  Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and under-represented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Biocore Course Planning

Planning your Biology coursework? Consider Biocore for the next academic year! Biocore is an integrated course sequence fulfilling requirements for any biological science major. It includes introductory to intermediate level honors courses that build over four semesters, with smaller class sizes and and high instructor to student ratio. There is a strong emphasis on critical thinking, scientific communication, and process of science. The Biocore program includes peer mentoring opportunities, outreach, and directed study options, all in a collaborative, supportive learning community.

College Possible, The Year of Service that Lasts a Lifetime College Possible is currently recruiting to fill AmeriCorps and VISTA positions for Fall 2014. City Year Information Session

Study Abroad in Oxford, England!

Study Social Entrepreneurship in the Global Economy in Oxford, England this summer! The program is three weeks long from July 7 - July 25 and will count for three credits (AAE 375). All majors are welcome to apply and the class counts toward the International Business degree at the Wisconsin School of Business as an elective for the Entrepreneurship Certificate at the School of Business.  The course will examine how innovative social ventures are tackling some of the world's most pressing problems with lectures, case studies, and group work. Experienced social entrepreneurs will guide student teams to develop real solutions to actual social entrepreneurship initiatives.  The application deadline is January 23 . Working Class Student Union Performance

On November 8th , the Working Class Student Union will host a performance and panel to examine student debt and "for-profit" colleges. At 8:00 p.m . , Aaron Calafato, activist and theater performer, will perform his solo-portrayal play, FOR PROFIT, examining the exploitation of the American college student and the $1.2 trillion student debt crisis. It tells the story of how he was forced to work as an admissions adviser at a for-profit institution in order to pay off his student loans. The play will be followed by a panel discussing student debt and the increasing cost of college.   This event is co-sponsored by the WUD Committee on Society & Politics, the Bipartisan Issues Group, the Labor and Working Class Studies Project, and the Havens Center.  

Fulbright information sessions

Are you interested in pursing a project abroad after you graduate? If so, attend an information session to learn more about the Fulbright Program!   If you are a Freshman or Sophomore, it is not too early to learn about this program. Are you a Junior or Senior? School Psychology Information Session

Are you considering School Psychology as a career? Do you like working with kids? Do you want to learn more about what you should be doing now to improve your chances of admission and test out the field? Come to the School Psychology Information Session on Wednesday, October 30 at 5:30 p.m. This session will cover what a career in School Psychology looks like, the difference between a PhD and EdS, prerequisite coursework, recommended coursework, and experiences you should be working towards now. Opera Tickets Now Available!

The L&S Honors Program will be going to see Tosca , performed by the Madison Opera, on Sunday, November 3 at 2:30 p.m. at the Overture Center for the Arts. Tickets can be purchased for $15.00 ( cash only , please) at Washburn Observatory. Students may bring one guest, but limited tickets are available and they are first come first serve. Spring 2014 Honors Colloquium

Greening the Greeks, Recycling the Romans: Environmental Perspectives from the Classical and Modern Worlds Apply for the Spring 2014 Honors Colloquium! This year's colloquium will draw together the disciplines of Classics and Environmental Studies in order to think critically about mankind's relationship with nature metaphorically, historically, philosophically, and scientifically. Students participating in the colloquium in Spring 2014 will take two courses together: an upper-level Classics seminar (Classics 568) called “Eco-Classics: Greening the Greeks, Recycling the Romans,” and a special honors section of Principles of Environmental Science (Environmental Studies 126). Students in the colloquium will receive 7 credits of automatic Honors (H), including 3 literature credits and 4 physical science credits.  Visit  this page  to learn more about the two courses (including detailed course descriptions) and to see when they are offered! Spring 2014 Automatic Honors Classes Spreadsheet

If you are trying to decide which honors classes to take this spring, check out our spreadsheet of the Spring automatic honors classes!  You can either scroll through the spreadsheet, or download it in order to filter your search. You can download the spreadsheet by clicking "File" and then "Download As..." (excel spreadsheet) or you can click "File" and then "Make a copy" if you are signed in to a gmail account. Once you have downloaded or copied the spreadsheet, you will be able to sort by Department, Course Number, etc.!  Be sure to check the online version of the spreadsheet often because we will continue to update it!

Peer Research Mentors Available for Drop-In Sessions

Are you interested in getting involved in research on campus? Wish there were students available with research experience and mentor training who could advise their peers about why and how to find a research opportunity? Look no further!  We are pleased to announce that Peer Research Mentors are available for drop-in sessions at Steenbock Library on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. from October 22 - December 11 - 2013 (no session 11/27) . Sessions are held in study room 108 on the ground floor. These mentors have expertise in bioscience research. This programming is presented as part of the BioCommons , an effort sponsored by Institute for Biology Education and Steenbock Library to create common space to support students across the biological sciences.

Tales from Planet Earth Film Festival

Profound questions about possible futures - precipitated by a changing climate, shifting energy resources, and the movement and displacement of people across the globe - will be explored during the Tales from Planet Earth film festival in Madison, November 1 - November 3 . More than 35 new and classic films will examine how past and present modes of living have either intentionally or inadvertently contributed to different "futures" for the planet. Discussions with filmmakers will follow several of the screenings.

Navigating Washington: A Conversation on Internships and Federal Careers

Join the History Department's David Rodriguez in discussing internships and career opportunities in Washington, D.C. Mr. Rodriguez has served the U.S. Department of State in several capacities, most recently as the Staff Assistant to the Senior Advisor for Hemispheric Security Policy. He has placed students in internships in Congress, the State Department, and U.S. embassies around the world.  This one-hour session will explore specific opportunities in the federal government, think tank, and non-profit sectors. Jones Leadership Center Program

The Willis Jones Leadership Center will be holding its first program on Thursday October 24th, 2013 from 6-8PM in Tripp Commons at the Memorial Union. The program is FREE for all UW Students and will be an interactive seminar in which students will learn about their personal leadership traits and how to use them in leadership activities and everyday life.

Law School Fair

Thinking about going to law school? Come to the Law School Fair, Thursday, October 24, 11 am-3 pm in Union South, Varsity Hall!   The Law School Fair is the pre-law event of the year! Representatives from more than 100 law schools will be present to speak with students one-on-one about the law school admissions process and about the schools represented. In addition, there will be an adjacent campus resource area with information on pre-law student organizations, LSAT prep courses, gap year service opportunities (Teach for America, Peace Corps), volunteering options (the Morgridge Center) and internships abroad (IIP). The campus resource area may be of particular interest to pre-law freshmen and sophomores interested in increasing their campus and community involvement; juniors who are starting to research LSAT preparation; and seniors who are considering taking time between college and law school. Brazilian Studies Association announces the 2014 Brazilian Initiation Scholarship (BIS) Competition! The deadline for the application is November 15, 2013 . The Brazilian Initiation Scholarship (BIS) is a key component of BRASA’s agenda to expand Brazilian Studies in the United States. BRASA invites applications from graduate and undergraduate students for a one-time $1,500 travel scholarship to do exploratory research in Brazil. This scholarship targets aspiring Brazilianists with relatively little or no experience in Brazil. It seeks to contribute to the student’s initial trip (for a period from six weeks to three months), to heighten the student’s interest in Brazil, and deepen her/his commitment to Brazilian studies in the United States. Returnee Event: Digital Storytelling Workshop/Film Fest

Share the study abroad experience through digital storytelling! This workshop, led by DesignLab and Software Training for Students (STS), will provide returned study abroad students with resources to being to create and produce a digital story, a 3-5 minute long film of images, narration, and music. On November 13, students will have the opportunity to share their digital story with workshop participants in a mini film fest.  The workshop will take place on October 4, from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. in the DesignLab Media Studio A (College Library, 2nd floor). Jewish Studies Grants

The Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies is now accepting applications for travel and research funding through the Mazursky Student Support Fund. Through the Charles and Gayle Mazursky Student Support Fund, the Center for Jewish Studies is able to offer a number of grants for research-related travel, including travel to resources (e.g., archives, oral history interviews, etc.), other venues essential for carrying out work on an undergraduate or graduate thesis, or travel to professional conferences. Funds may also be used for research materials, but not books or related materials for courses. Mazursky grants will typically amount to $500 for domestic travel and $800 for international travel, but more or less may be awarded at the discretion of the scholarships committee.  For more information and to download the application, please visit our website . IAP Study Abroad Scholarships

2013 Luce Scholar Program Competition

This scholarship provides a year's internship in an Asian country related to the scholar's interests. Any professional field will be considered, with the exception of Asian Affairs/Asian Studies. The program is designed to provide highly qualified young Americans, who lack extensive knowledge of Asian affairs and who would not gain this knowledge through their normal career trajectories, an extended period of exposure to an Asian country. To be eligible, a nominee must be a U.S. citizen, under the age of 30 at the beginning the program, and hold at least a B.A. Applicants should have little or no experience in the country of internship.

Sociology 475: Classical Sociological Theory for Honors (still open)

Looking for an honors only social science course? This one may be for you!  This course is a basic introduction to the writings of Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. We will have two goals in reading and discussing this material during the course of the quarter. The first, not surprisingly, is to understand the theoretical arguments that these authors are making — the logic of their arguments, the underlying assumptions, the internal contradictions and difficulties the arguments encounter, and the ways in which the authors (sometimes) support their theoretical arguments with data. The second goal of the class is to use these readings as examples of how to construct theoretical arguments in sociology. Many courses in the social sciences and humanities ask students to use texts as vehicles for criticism — that is, to summarize what particular authors say about a topic and to critique or defend the assertions of those authors. The focus in this course will be on using the reading

In this exciting program students are immersed in some of the richest ecosystems on Earth, and gain first-hand experience in ongoing conservation projects!  After intensive Spanish training and homestays in Quito, we embark on an extended exploration of Ecuador’s magnificent tropical habitats.  Participants spend two weeks conducting research in the western Amazon rainforest, investigate at length ongoing Ceiba conservation projects in Andean cloud forest and on the wild Pacific coast, and study marine biology during a three-week visit to the world-famous Galapagos Islands.  During the final month you willl put your training into action by undertaking an internship with a local organization of your choice! Fulbright U.S. Student Undergraduate Information Session

Come meet  Zig Hampel-Arias ,  a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador  and current graduate student in the Physics department, who received a Fulbright grant to do research after completing his undergraduate degree. We will discuss the different types of grant categories, the application process, and how to start planning for your project.   If you are an undergraduate interested in pursuing a project abroad after you graduate, this session is for you--it is never too early to find out what you need for a competitive Fulbright application. If you will be graduating in December 2013 or May 2014, you should begin planning your Fulbright project now.
